Magnificent three bedroom, two bath home with expansive, 180-degree views of Plaka beach and across the Aegean to Paros island. The house is located in Orkos, a lovely enclave between two long, white sand beaches—Plaka and Mikri Vigla. It is a 7-minute walk to the beach. Most of the rooms both upstairs and downstairs have doors leading out to stone terraces with views of the sea to the west and north or the emerald green hills strewn with giant white boulders and ancient stone terraces to the east. The entire house has central heating. There are various shapes, sizes and levels of garden areas, waiting to be planted.

Upstairs includes a large kitchen, a small guest bathroom and two living rooms, one with a fireplace, both with breathtaking views of the sea. The entire upstairs has stunning natural stone floors (as does the downstairs, save two bedrooms, which have wood floors). The downstairs has three bedrooms, a large master bathroom that rivals any in Architectural Digest, a small laundry room, and the water pump room.

The doors and windows are all custom made by Mr. Kapris and sons in their Naxos workshop. The two front doors (the main one to a living room; the other to the kitchen) were similarly hand crafted of a beautiful reddish-brown African hardwood. All door handles and other exterior and interior fixtures are nickel (i.e., not inexpensive brass) and the two front doors are fitted with the most secure locks available (though theft of any kind is relatively unheard of on the island). The windows are double pane glass in wood frames.

UPSTAIRS:
The kitchen is fitted with top of the line stainless steel appliances including an expensive fridge from New Zealand. All kitchen cupboards and cabinets were custom built in Italy and are of the finest quality wood (and stainless hinges) with interior stainless fittings for storing plates, pots, etc. The kitchen counters and backsplash are made of the highest quality marble available.

The living room with the fireplace has built-in bancos (like Mexican adobe homes) and a private terrace out the double glass doors.

There is no way to adequately describe the sumptuous view from the terrace, as it is extraordinary…to the west and north you have a 180-degree view of Plaka beach and across the Aegean to Paros Island with a great expanse of turquoise sea between them; to the east are hills dramatically strewn with protruding boulders and ancient stone terraces; below are the green fields of farms.

The small guest bathroom has stone walls and the little shower is paved with smooth riverstones from New Mexico.

DOWNSTAIRS:
The pump room has all new water pump, water heater, and all the other machines that heat and service the house. The owner has left various batteries to power foreign electronics—including a computer—in this room.

The small laundry room has brand new, top of the line, energy efficient German washer and dryer. They were purchased and installed in July 2006 and have never been used.

The spa-like master bathroom has warm-hued stone walls and floor and stunning Italian bath tub, bidet and toilet that are sculptural in form. The sink is a deep blue glass bowl that sits on a stone ledge. Simple, natural, elegant, functional and beautiful.

The master bedroom adjoins the second bedroom (yoga room?) through a stone arch. Double doors in the yoga room open out to a stone terrace with a view of Plaka beach and the sea. The floors in these two rooms are wood. There is an area just outside the bedroom window that is perfect for planting night blooming jasmine and other fragrant flowers. Outside the yoga room a flower box is built into the wall of the terrace. The smaller, third bedroom has two double doors leading out to terraces (one covered by a lovely arch). The master bedroom and third bedroom both have spacious built-in closets and cabinets—again, of the highest quality.

The outside areas are ready for your creative design ideas. The two small parking areas could be paved with stone, brick, textured cement or left as is; a stone wall could be built in front with iron gates or could be left as is; the terraces could be covered with pergolas or trellises; a traditional stone forno (wood-fired bread oven) could be built in the garden area just outside the kitchen; the largest garden area could be fitted with a pool or a large organic garden; the smaller, lower terraced areas could be left as natural, wild vegetation or planted with grape vines…the possibilities are endless…!
