Photo Album - Cozumel, Mexico      Back

Located at the eastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, Cozumel was formed by coral limestone rock and sandy soils and is the largest inhabited island in Mexico. It is a renowned dive spot. The island of Cozumel measures 30 miles from north to south but only 10 miles from east to west. On either side of the island, beaches form a long, white sandy coast. Gentle waves and transparent waters wash the western side of the island, while huge waves crash against the eastern side.

The development of Cozumel differs from that of Cancun, which was planned. Cozumel growth has been gradual and spontaneous.

As well as natural beauty, clean and peaceful beaches, clear waters, multicolored reefs, exotic flora and fauna; the island offers archaeological vestiges of Mayan culture. Its inhabitants preserve traditions such as Carnival, the religious rites of Easter week, and the festivals of Santa Cruz in May, plus San Miguel in September. All of these events, with the participation of both locals and visitors, combine prehispanic and Catholic rituals

During celebrations the local character and color can be most appreciated. The identity and strength that years and decades have given to Cozumel make it fully beautiful with deep historical roots and broad future vision. Click these pictures to open a high resolution version in a new window.
